I practiced some good advice given on this forum, which was to find a good clean background and work it. After about 20 minutes with this very cooperative tri-color heron, this is the result. Cropped to vertical and for composition (head/bill angling down from upper right corner of frame), minimal cleanup on water.

Very well done, I like the habitat foreground, nice focus, I wish the beak shadow was not across its back.

Nice pose and sharp on both head and body. Looks like this was taken later in the day, harsh light. Fill flash would help the contrasty shadow. Also a little more room at bottom would allow for virtual feet.

Nice habitat shot. You did very great job with the harsh light. Nice and sharp. Would wish for a lower angle but sometimes impossible.

Great sharpness and IQ. Woulds like to see more eye contact
