It never ceases to amaze me what these guys can put down. I'll assume he consumed it?
Great shot - what a moment - spill the beans I reckon he couldn't have swallowed it!!
This birds eyes are bigger than its stomach. Amazing capture - both image and fish.
Wonderful shot, Stuart. Great expression. Several years ago I witness a similar scene (but didn't capture it nearly as well as this), where the GBH struggled for quite some time trying to figure out how to eat the fish, and finally abandoned it. Let us know what happened here.
he abandoned the fish no way!
Terrific catch. You got a pretty good angle on both bird and prey. A tad more room on the left will be of benefit, IMO. Once-in-a-lifetime kinda shot...well done.
Ha ha. Hilarious caption. It's amazing what these guys can gobble down. Great moment captured. TFS.
Holy cow, what an opportunity for you to have!! Bonus that the heron is in breeding colours too. Good job with this...and please let us know what happened next!!
the heron cold not devour the fish he just abandoned it
Excellent image Stuart!

What a catch!

Stuart, this such an interesting image. We've all seen the herons with larger fish and the swallowing of them. This particular fish has to be the largest I've ever seen with a heron. Congrats.
Wow, fish looks way too heavy to be hanging from the beak like that, no wonder he abandoned it, wasted energy.
