    Default Black-Cheeked Woodpecker

During my Costa Rica workshop with Greg, we spent a day near Arenal Volcano photographing birds at a small nature sanctuary. Their feeder was quite busy with an assortment of beautiful birds. The problem was that it was difficult to get a clean BG. This Black-Cheeked Woodpecker chose one of the few perches with a nice BG, and I managed a few good frames of him.

Excellent image Doug! I like the sharpness, details, HA and exposure. Good use of the fill flash as well.

Doug, great portrait. Your treatment of the soft light with fill-flash looks fantastic. ISO 1600 looks quite good.

Superb WP image,Doug. I love that he is on such a thin perch. Asome exposure and detail. I really like the mix of yellow and red on this guy.

Great work Doug! I really love the colors on this guy. Very nice BG with the lighter area behind the birds upper body!

Doug, this is awesome. Terrific sharpness and excellent angle...which is hard with woodpeckers, I guess. So well done.

Is the WB a little on the cooler side? I reckon, WB will be very tricky in these conditions.

I'm partial to Wood peckers anyway and I really like this shot. Nice background and sharpness through out.

Excellent detail Doug, and the sharpness is tops. I do like te overall colours, and well done on getting a clean BG - I know how difficult it is at feeders to position yourself for a clear BG.

You've brought out the beauty of this woodpecker quite well, Doug. It's nice to see a woodpecker shot in which the woodpecker is not crowded out by a thick tree trunk.

Thanks Craig! That's one of the things I liked most about this image.
