You posted this theme right as I'd found some photos from last summer of a Sandhill crane and her chick.... The nest was really too far away for my lens, and I know the image is soft (cropped), but I think the cuteness factor makes it worth posting (could be wrong!). Just seemed so coincidental that you posted the Straight Down The Barrell theme just as I was commenting on the chick looking right at me.... So here it is.

Amy, what are the tech. details of this post? It's a pity it is a large crop as that hampers the impact of the "straight down the barrel" look of the chick. Also would have cropped just underneath the brown grasses as the bright water/mud pulls my eye towards it, taken away from the actual scene.

    Nikon D80, Nikkor 70-200 2.8 shot at 200mm
    Shutterspeed 1/500th
    Aperture f3.5

Yes - I knew it was not going to stand up to that much cropping, which is why the photo has been forgotten for so long... I think the focus was more on the moms legs and the chick was soft anyway. But I was having trouble finding edges to focus on with all of the business surrounding them.

    Thanks for the comments.

Amy, you were pretty much wide open on your aperture. Stopping down would have helped rendering the mother and the chick sharper.

Yes, I was concentrating on the mother, and wanted to make sure and blur the busy background. (I was also reveling in having my new fast lens) Never occurred to me that the chick would do something so adorable that I'd be able to get its eyes like this. In other shots, the chick stayed right under its moms legs, and is sharper, but turned this way and that.... I've been recovering from a broken ankle, surgery, another stress fracture, etc.... so I'm looking forward to being able to go out and get more shots soon!!

Nice image Amy, the chick looks really cute! I like your vert composition.
