    Default Lion from the Archives

Another image that I have worked through in the last few weeks.

This male lion grew up in the Northern Kwando, before coming to dominate the Selinda Pride. Grant will know his current where abouts.

He has always been quite agressive, perhaps something to do with his 'Milky Eye'.

    Taken in 2007.

Long time no see this one, he does not look his usual ugly self. He was a bit of a letdown after the priorowners of the pride, but all things must pass.

Last time I heard he was in the area of Linyanti.

Not heard any reports of any good lion at Selinda for ages, not like the good old days.

Lokks like it could do with a touch o sharpening or boost in contrast.

This really does warrant a larger version here Russell, so we can really appreciate the full content of this image.

Clarity and depth looks good at this size and the catchlight in the right eye is a nice touch. Personally would like to see a fraction more at the foot of the image.

I am sure Grant can update what's happening, as you say, as he is very much 'on the ground' and has his finger on the pulse, albeit that he is very busy with guests at present. BTW what was the ISO?

Hi Russell, really nice tones here, and excellent interaction captured between irritable adult and playful cub. Like the BG too. Well done. About the lion, he has not been seen since late last year in the Linyanti concession, although he has left his coalition partner (who has two good eyes) behind here with a small pride of females. We would have to assume that he is dead I guess..not normal for a male to leave his coalition buddy otherwise..

nice moment here Russel - I like how the male's position and cub's position enforce the "golden mean" compositionally if you start in the top RHS corner :)

Well done Russell. Like the pose and inclusion of the cub. Agree with a slight contrast bump. Well composed.

    Thanks, Ken.

I will probably end up adding a touch more contrast.

Selinda actually have a couple of nice males that wander into the Kwando. They spend a lot of time around the Spillway.

Thanks, Steve. Unfortunately there is no more on the bottom - this is from a series and the ones with more space don't have such good interaction.

I will put a large image up later this week and host it myself to get round the size limits.

    The ISO was 100.

    Thanks for the update, Grant.

I am still dreaming of the safari permit that would allow me to drive all three concessions with some fly camping.

This is an awsome image Russell! I am not sure about boosting contrast but I feel it has some reddish cast which I tried to reduce in this repost - what do you think?

    Russell,

As you mentioned others with more room at the bottom, stich two images together to get that room. It works better then you might think on grass.

    Great interaction and background.

Even though he was a "Mohican" a lot of people would be upset if this was true, surely he was a little too young for this poossibility to have arisen from natural causes.

Fantastic image. I like the OP but think that Ofer's repost looks more natural. The cub really adds a lot to this great looking image.

Great shot. Love the angle of the big male's head and the view of those teeth. This one has a nice contrast between the fierce and powerful and the playful and vulnerable.
