A life tick for me, as these beautiful birds came out to play on a recent trip to Corkscrew Swamp, FLA.
Canon 1D mk3, 600mm f4 +1.4x tele [840mm], ISO 800, 1/80sec @ f5.6, tripod, dist to subj 7metres, no flash, -0.3EV, some BKGR NR.
There were plenty of shots on the feeders, but i waited for the bird to perch and this together with f5.6 and an uncluttered background, gave me a cleaner shot.
Richard:
Your efforts were rewarded with a nice shot of this beauty. Corkscrew isn't an easy place to get a clean shot near the feeders, you did very well.
Framing perhaps a bit tight, but you may not have had much clean background to play with there.
The feathers show great detail. For my taste, the sharpening is right on the edge of being overdone, but I do tend to not sharpen as much as others might like, so take that under consideration.
Wow! did I say wow? Very impressive. I went to corkscrew once, saw the bunting, but it never landed while I was there, anywhere but the feeder. Very good feather detail. My only quibble (minor, indeed) would be I wished you had a bit more canvas. Congrats.
thanks for that Todd.
I did have some taken here with my 600mm f4 without 1.4x tele - there is more canvas, but to get the bird detail I would have to crop more. It's amazing what difference popping the old 1.4x on makes. but the you lose the canvas. You can't win sometimes.
Yes, wonderful bird, nice detail good head angle, amazing colors, nice background. I do wish for more DOF on the bird but understand why you did what you did.
As Randy mentions it is not easy taking a pleasing photograph of a Painted Bunting at the Corkscrew feeders. I managed a few "record" shots, but nothing artistically redeeming or satisfying.
Nice for you to have gotten a clean image. Very appealing overall with great colours and a nice relaxed pose from this fella. Perhaps tight in the frame, but the plumage is well put into evidence.
