    Default Avocet in breeding plumage

Taken last breeding season at Albany mudflats.

    40D + 500L f4.5 + non-reporting 1.4x on a monopod; ISO 400, f7.1, 1/640. Very modest crop.

Hi Allen - the first thing that grabs me is the lack of a catchlight or any detail in the eye - could just be the resizing for the web - but on my screen just looks like a black hole - never the best IMHO!
The OOF foreground reeds are a little distracting and could be easily removed which would improve the image.
    Sharpness and detail look good.
    Keep em coming :)

Allen, what a lovely portrait! I also find the FG elements a bit distracting. If they were shorter I don't think it would be much of an issue - it would just look like surrounding foliage - but here it really seems to pull the eye away from that beautiful bird.

I think you did a great job on exposure and ss though - and a nice pleasing crop as well.
