Black winged stilt - becoming one of my favorite birds.

    7d, 500mm + 1.4, 1/2500 @ 5.6, 400iso. EV +1/3.

The head angle is not perfect but I thought this shot gives a sense of action about to happen. I went with this crop to make a point of the circular ripples in the water and that the action - pending - was to occur towards the right.

    Thanks Tom

    Tom:

    Nice shooting angle, great legs.

    Good exposure,drip, ripples.

There certainly is a sense of impending activity as you stated. That helps with the head angle. It would have been stronger to have the same image with head angle our way, but having a 'subject' that he is looking at helps.

    Cheers

    Randy

    Tom,
What time of day did you photograph this? I ask because the light looks a little harsh.

The image is sharp and I like the placement in the frame, the water rings and water droplet.

The image needs a little CW rotation.
I understand what you are saying about the action.
Many times these birds will move their head from side to side when foraging. If that was the case, photographing this scene when the bird swings it's head right, past parallel, would offer the same sense of action while making this a stronger image.

I don't mind the look away as this is the typical hunting pose of this species. Excellent Shot!

James - about 9.30 am. The light here is pretty harsh in the summer, even at this time in the morning. I should have been out well before this time. Photograph black and white birds only between the hours of 6.00am - 7.00am!!!

    Thanks all for the comments.
