This is a big crop, 25% of FF, but I thought it held up pretty well.
Taken near the Bodie Island Lighthouse on North Carolinas outer banks. Sony A700, 70-400G @400mm, f11, 1/640, iso400, -0.3ev. Levels and sharpen duck.

Hi Peter. You got a nice look from this pintail. Good head turn, and raised tail. colors and sharpness look good although the eye looks a bit soft. The large crop did hurt the IQ, and a lower shooting angle might have helped. (The latter often troubles me, since it's not always possible.)

For 25% I think it held up better than expected but it's nowhere near what a full frame image would look like as far as clarity. Once you get down in the 50-70% range you start to really lose EQ and if you look closely (or try printing this in an 8x10 size) I think you'll see the difference.

You did get a very nice pose/HA and the exposure looks good - both the whites and blacks are in check.

Hi Peter. As the others have mentioned, the IQ does suffer by the crop, but the exposure is good and it works for me.
