Canon 5Dmk2, Canon 70-200 f/4.0 L IS lens, handheld. S/speed 1/500s at f5.6, iso 640. Metering Eval, Ai Servo focus. Cropped from 21mp to 20mp. Location Savuti camp, Botswana. February 2011, 18h11pm.
I photographed this adult wild dog belonging to the Linyanti pack a couple of weeks ago. I found the grasses quite interesting for a BG, and zoomed in to 200mm to try get rid of lots of distractions between us. All C and C welcome

Certainly an interesting concept with the BG and personally I like the change of BG here Grant.

The stance conveys that almost stalking feel almost entering/walking through the frame. Not sure about the face & depth as am viewing on the laptop and it varies depending on your POV

A hard act to follow after your last one.

Nice backlight for both the critter and the grass. Good detail in the wild dog and interesting expression on him. Nicely done.

I like the rim-light and the grasses here Grant...nice close-up perspective. I would have liked just a little more space on top, but not a biggy

This does not work or me in anyway, it falls between two stools it is neither backlit nor correctly exposed for the dogs face. The Dog also needs more walk into space. :2:2

Thanks for the comments. Steve, do you think the face is too dark (as I have darkened it whilst adding more contrast in processing)?
Robert, I am glad you like it.
Morkel, you are right about more space on top, it could do with a bit more. I cropped off a 1mp sliver from the bottom and right to get rid of some grasses but nothing more on top.
    thanks for looking and writing
    cheers

I lvoe this!! The back light works very well! Here is a repost with some selective brightening of the face and body - please let me know your thoughts.

I very much like Ofer's version, the dog has great detail in the second version and well done on trying the shot, difficult light but it worked out very nicely TFS

Hi Ofer, thanks for the repost, it is better than my OP. I actually darkened the dog too much when trying to boost contrast for the BPN post..I will have another go at it
Thanks Vivaldo, glad you liked it. This time of year there is lots of tall grass which can make photography difficult, but I was trying to make something of it...
    cheers and thanks for looking

Grant, I really like the intensity of this image, despite the fact that a little more room at the top would have been nice, the position of the dog in the frame works well for me. The feathery grass is a bonus and frames the dog nicely. Lovely detail in the coat but I wonder if the eye could take another round of USM. This is quite different from your earlier shot but is an attractive portrait which is really finished off by the grasses and the way the light is reflecting off the seed heads.

Your repost looks great IMO. I think the composition is spot on - no need for more room at the top IMHO.

Hi Hilary, thanks for the comments. I was using centre AF point on the 5D, hence the lack of space on top. I will keep your sharpening comment in mind. Glad you like the grasses, I spent maybe 40 minutes with those dogs on the move, and they hardly turned into the light at all, so I had to try something different. They are also not the easiest animals to expose for, especially as they have dark and light fur on their face at the same time.
Ofer, glad you liked it, and thanks again for the help

Re-posts are a definite improvement Grant. Nice to see a different look from time to time. Grasses add a diferent element.
