Bird looks nice & sharp on the head on neck, so great start for first BIF!! Exposure looks good, although perhaps could try lightening up the bird's head & back a bit more. The BG is the unfortunate distraction here - too much going on & preferably should be more OOF (perhaps try adding some additional blur to BG). The picture doesn't look straight, so I'd recrop with a different angle.
Welcome to the forum, Cody. Stick with it because this si a great place to learn.
Nice job on capturing this mallard in flight. I agree with Gordons critique.

Welcome Cody to ETL! I don't mind the background (BG) as much as the two men but there is a definite angle here that leaves you feeling like something is out of kilter. You might try using the distortion correction under FILTER to see if you could get that fence to lean back a bit more instead of forward. I'd also go with a bit more blur on the BG and I'd cut the frame off so the tree running down the right side didn't make it into the frame.
The bird in flight (BIF) looks very good. Catching him with his wing further down would have resulted in an even better image - make sure you're in burst mode when you do BIF and that will help you get the right pose at the right moment.
Glad to have you with us. Make sure you comment on the other images - it's a great way to learn!
Thanks for the advice guys! I hadn't really thought to look at the angle but now that you mention it, it is definitely off. I'll go back and recrop and see if i can get a bit better image. This was taken with my rebel xt and so the burst mode is not much of a burst at 3.5 frames /sec. I just got my 40D last night so I hope to be out a whole lot more and learning all I can. I cropped this a bit so I could of used a bit more focal length and gone down to F5.6 to try and blur a little more. So many things to think about when your trying to get something flying through the air :) Thanks for the kind welcome guys!
