I have read and researched all the monitor choices for photo processing purposes, and the NEC spectraviews typically get the highest ratings. However, not everyone can afford to dish out $1700 plus for a monitor, so I am wondering about other options. When I get back from my trip to Texas this March, I need to start saving up for a new monitor. I want at least a 27" model and keep coming back to the Dell Ultra Sharp U2711. If you read and trust the reviews at Dell's site (and I know they are probably really biased) you would think that this monitor is fantastic for everything (including photo work). Yet I constantly see people at these forums saying the Dell Ultrasharp will not be usable or acceptable for critical photo work! However, no one ever goes into details as to what would actually not be good and why. Also, people tend to make it seem like it is a night and day situation between the Dell and the NEC, when the differences might be very minor to some people. I do very little printing, and when I do they are sent off to a custom lab for prints. Most of my work is for posting at my website, posting at forums and processing for images banks and publications. I have been working for many years now on a Viewsonic VP930b (it just won't die) and have had no problems or complaints with it, and it seems to calibrate quite well. So isn't the Dell going to be a lot better than this antique Viewsonic?
Anyway, if someone can give me details as to what would be bad about using the Dell and why it will not work for photo work, or can offer other IPS panel choices in the same price range (i.e. $850 Canadian) I would love to hear about them :)
