Does anyone have some suggestions for a flash?
I am going to get a new flash and I was going to get the 580EX II, but I heard that it can fail sometimes...
I'll be using this flash for several purposes on my Canon 50D:
- Macro work with my Canon 180mm f/3.5L, hand holding the flash with a off shoe cord so the light will hit the subject from the side/top, etc...
- Wildlife and bird photography along with a Better Beamer, Canon 300mm f/4L lens, sometimes I also use a 1.4 TC.
- General portrait work, but not for weddings or work that will require rapid flash
Ken- I bought the 580EXII about three years ago and it has gone bad on me. BPN mod Robert Amuroso says he experiences the same thing and has to replace his every couple of years. I need to look into this more but I just don't think this is acceptable. Before I replace mine I'll be looking at other brands like Metz. I suspect that for bird work you are going to need the most powerful flash available, which points to the 580 or equivalent in another brand.
Thanks for the info. I'll also look into metz as well.
In May I'm heading to Madagascar for a few weeks and I'm planning on using the flash to photograph nocturnal animals and reptiles in the rainforest at night (in addition to tons of other stuff) so I'm sure that I'll need the power of the 580.
I also thought about getting the 580 EX II, but also buying the 2 or 3 year protection plan if it goes bad, but that's an added expense that I really shouldn't need to do.
I have a 430EX (not the "II" model) and have been very pleased with its performance for general use (including Macro). I use it occasionally with the Better Beamer and it works for me with my 400/5.6, but don't know how it would work with the longer lenses. It has been very reliable.
The extended protection plan won't do you much good if it dies in Madagascar, so you might consider bringing a backup.
I was also looking for a new flash recently.Looked at the 580 EXII,430 EX II,Sigma EF 610 DG Super.I couldnt afford the 580 EX II,430 didnt have enough features for me and was too weak.
Bought the Sigma EF 610 DG Super.Cost the same as the 430 EX II,have the same features as the 580 for less money. The Sigma's guide number is 61m @ ISO 100 on 105mm.So its quite strong.Very happy so far.
Good lead Neil. I'll have a look. I wonder if you could post the head width and height of the Sigma. I will compare it to my (failed) 580EXII to see of the Better Beamer fits and report back.
Sure thing John. The Sigma's head is 45mm long,42mm height,75mm width. The Sigma is certainly a good option.Have HSS,Master,Slave everything the 580 EX II has.Even has wireless HSS.Love mine.U are lucky John I am still searching for a better beamer. Here in my country they are expensive.Hope the measurements help.
