    Default Mountain Bluebird

Mountain bluebird at Yellowstone. This male and his mate were taking turns feeding the chicks in the nest hole. I noticed that the adults had to drop an inch or two out of the hole when leaving in order to spread their wings so I fired away until I got this image. Sharpening of head and eye in CS5. I know the bright OOF patches are distracting and that, in retrospect, I should have changed my position to the right. All C/C welcome.

P.S. The bird was really that blue--everyone shooting this scene remarked about the strong color.

Gary, your patience paid off. Well timed for the take off, and just love those blues. The speckled highlights dont distract, but I would run some NR on the BG.

Lovely shot maybe a little NR on background - but only for the sake of it - I don't find it intrusive. I think I would have applied sharpening to the whole bird.

    Gary:

Good self critique here. The light looks really soft, so light angle not as much of concern, and moving to your right if possible would have helped with the background perhaps.

The birch bark adds a lot as it keeps the eye moving around the image to find new patterns.

    Cheers

What a pleasantly coloured bird, never seen anything like it. The BG is not helping but I do not find that a problem, a tad more sharpening should make this pop.

Beautiful color. Good comments above. Good work anticipating the drop as the bird began to fly. Line of tree edge intersecting the head is a bit of a distraction, so a move to the right might have paid off.
