Hello everyone. Well I accidently ran into this small yet wonderful bird. Its kind of a large crop but wanted to know what you all think. C&C welcomed and highly encouraged.
Camera - Nikon 300s, Lense Nikon 200-400mm f4 w/ 1.4 tc, Exposure - 1/2000, Aperture - f5.6, ISO - 320, Focal length - 550mm, Metering - spot, Aperture Priority
Wren looks nice and sharp, with great pose & head angle. The big crop isn't my preference (as small bird & large perch isn't in focus), and I think a landscape crop losing a chunk of the bottom might work better. Also perhaps a tad more lightening of the wren could help.
I'm often torn when deciding how to crop for small birds. I think the large crop provides excellent perspective on just how small this guy is. My non-birding friends and family really appreciate this approach. If you're staying with the large crop, I'd clone out the bits sticking out from the branch on the far right to smooth out the arch
Robert, you really did get a good detailed version of this wren. He does look a bit underexposed to me, though and the blue BG feels the same way - just a bit dark and muddy. Try using a curves adjustment or levels adjustment to bring out those high and midtones a bit more.
I see your point about the perspective of the bird against the rather large branch but it feels like the bird gets lost here to me. I'd much rather see way less branch and way more bird.
Keep it up...it will all come naturally to you the more you practice!
