This 'battled scared' king was just taking time out in the late evening sun. His face indicating a tough life and full of history.

I am sure some will want more below, but I really wanted this tranquil face to be the main focus.

    Very dramatic Steve.

That is one relaxed male. Excellent use of light and choice of title.

Wow, that is some scared face.... certainly glad I am not a lion :)

I like it as it certainly tells a story and I do not mind that you have left the bottom out. I would almost be tempted to crop it even tighter and take the stick and portion of his leg showing because my eyes are drawn to it.

    Well done Steve :)

excellent light and pose and certainly looks like a "seasoned" male

to my eye it looks like it might be a wee bit oversharpened Steve? the fur is a bit "crispy"?

was the BG dark as shot? sunlight or spotlight for lighting?

Cheers Austin & Noelle. Noelle, the IQ could allow for a portrait crop, allowing a tighter crop.

Morkel, yes, having posted I thought that, just on the mane only, but just a fraction, hey ho. The light was all natural, so because of the strength it made for a dramatic contrast, plus it allowed me to play with EV, but always checking the histogram.

Very dramatic lighting Steve. Love the dark bg. This would no doubt make a strong vert as well for an additional look. Agree with Morkel on the crispiness, but as you mentioned the high contrast has enhanced this. Well done.

Beautiful light and love the face … makes me feel like having a rest myself. I actually rather like the grass, but I've decided that I must have a rebellious streak and it is a bit quirky.

I am not so sure about the over-sharpening. The strong direct side-lighting makes the fur detail jump out of the image at you. I like it as is.

I also like the composition and am OK without the legs in the image.

    Thanks everyone.

Hilary, always good to be rebellious, providing its within the guidelines.

Thanks Robert, I felt there was enough within the content to provide the visual legs, body, FG so it's nice to know my thoughts were correct. It's nice occasionally to have good/great light, it makes all the difference, and for those of us rarely have that option is is so refreshing.

I must say this is a "first" for me a dozing Lion

I agree with Morkel on the apparent oversharpness, maybe the light has contributed to this.

I am not seeing much in the way of battle scars.

    Hi Steve

I have never really like images with such dark BG as they normally look unrealistic. I have to say this is a first. It works very well in this image. Great IQ and lion pops so nicely TFS

Hi Steve, I am a bit late to this but i think it is probably the best 'sleeping lion' shot I have seen. Great use of light, and the techs look okay to me...and I am with Hilary, I like the grass, think it adds something of habitat.
    cheers

Love the light and the black background really brings out the lion.
