If I did this again & had the time/expertise to plan it out more, would have swapped some speed for more DOF.

wow Gordon, what a gorgeous bird! lovely sharp detail, nice colors - wish there was a little more light on the feet and the underside of the far wing ---- wonderful photo!

One of my favourite birds Gordon! I think you have rendered it quite beautifully here. The light is harsh and the bird is contrasty but there's lots of detail in the whites on my monitor. The underwing is dark and could be lightened a little. I really like the wing angle and composition as well. It seems that your f-stop choice has produced a sharp image from wing-tip to wing-tip. The image is certainly sharp where it matters most- head and eye.

    IMHO Africa's most beautiul Crane.

In this case very well captured, especially given the conditions.

I am continually puzzled by the relationship beteen F stop and shutter speed, in this instance it seems to have worked

Awesome shot! I agree on the depth of field idea. Bird looks a bit dark on the underside ...
    What ISO did you use?
    Congrats!

Wow, what a beautiful bird! I just am learning, but other than what has been said, I can find no other thing to say. I love how you captured so many textures and color. Great shot!

Kristin, my Exif Viewer show he had ISO640.

Thanks for all the comments, much appreciated. I'll be trying to lighten the shadows as suggested. And yes, it was ISO 640.
