Last year was quite poor on the photography front for me (new job, moving home), but now want to get back into it...

Taken during a recent trip to South Africa. All comments & suggestions welcome

Gordon, I like the angle of the incoming bird on this one...unfortunately, the sun is giving you a hard time here. Try a shadow/highlight adjustment in PS - when I did it it opened up quite a bit more detail in the shadowed areas of the bird. It did, also, bring up a fair amount of noise, though. I really like the pose here and the diagonal line of the bird offers a nice overall position within the frame.

THanks for the helpful suggestions, Julie. I'll go back and have another go at the RAW file

Agree with Jules and like her repost. Difficult to do much with the strong side-lighting but opening the bird up has really helped. It's easy to say but harder to accomplish, but it makes your life so much easier if you are able to position yourself so that the sun is behind you when the bird is flying towards you. Having the wind at your back is a real bonus in these situations because birds tend to land into the wind and their airspeed is reduced.
