Default Green-crowned Brilliant female coming in to feed

Photographed at Bosque del Paz in Costa Rica on workshop with Doug Brown and Greg Basco. Although focus falls off dramatically towards the back of the bird, as it is entering the focal plane rather than hovering in it, I love the sense of motion and the wing position. Multi-flash setup with sugar water injected in a single petal.

    EOS 7D, 70-200mm f/2.8 at 170m, 1/200", f/9/, ISO 400, on tripod

    Comments welcome and encouraged,

This is a pleasure to look at Bill. All three elements are sharp and positioned well and the bg is great.

I am looking foward to the return of the ruby throated hb next month here in south MS.

Loved this frame when I saw it on your camera's LCD screen Bill. Still love it! The pose is to die for. I could see brightening the bird just a little.

    Bill,
I love that it is different in that it is flying toward the focal plane rather than parallel to it. Lovely composition and set up. I am sure you could have photographed these little guys all day!
    Congrats!

Hi, Bill. What a cool image. I'm really happy that you were able to take full advantage of this setup! I know I was excited when we found the props.

The spread wings are great and really add to the composition here. On my desktop monitor the bird looks good but a bit of brightening as Doug suggested would be an interesting thing to try.

The plant, by the way, is in the Ericaceae (blueberry/cranberry) family. It's a native hummingbird-pollinated epiphyte. I believe the genus is Cavendishia but I would have to double-check.

    Cheers,
    Greg Basco

Thanks to those of you who provided comments. The feedback, both + and -, all gets filed away and hopefully has a positive impact on future work.
