Default Any Sony and or Sigma 150 to 500 F5 users out there?

I'm new to this forum and I've noticed that most of you are using Nikons or Canons. I've been a Minolta now Sony user for quite a while and have accumulated too much to switch. I have both a Sony A700 and the new A580, both of which I love. I just updated my Tamron 200 to 400 for a new 150 to 500 Sigma. I used it this weekend to do some distant ducks (probably a tenth of the screen). It was a pretty dreary day and I was shooting at ISO 800. I was disappointed with the results as far as sharpness goes. I'm hoping that it has to do with very flat lighting and too small of a subject. Is anybody using this lens? I won't be able to get out this weekend to test it but I'd love to hear your comments. Thanks

Sigma 150-500 is just a so-so lens. I heard (just heard, not verified) that even the Sigma 50-500 OS is abit better in terms of IQ and sharpness. While Sony 70-400G is the best lens among its competitors (better than Canon's 100-400 and Nikon's 80-400).

    HI Dick,

I've got the Sigma 120-400 which I believe is a very similar lens. I've come to the conclusion that the sharpness just isn't there to make very large crops and still have nice IQ. Considering the price for a lens that reaches 400 mm, I've been altogether happy, as long as I accept that the best quality comes at f8 with a close to sensor filling subject.

The 150-500 is capable of some very good results when used properly.

I have had the sigma 150-500 for about 18 months, I find the OS system works very good, the overall sharpness of an image is IMO is not as good as say a 100-400 L series lens , but is quite acceptable. Having said that I have seen some outstanding images on the internet taken with this lens. Personally i feel it is a good lens for me at my stage of the learning curve.

You should not have any problems with this lens. See Ken Rockwell's review. I bought a copy on Ebay, and have been pleased (with reservations). I upgraded from a Nikon 80-400mm (nice lens but no sw focus motor - very slow). The Sigma is faster, but not as fast as a real Nikon sw focus motor. The image stabilization works great if you give it just a second to settle down. I think you will like the lens once you get used to it. It is big! Much bigger than my Nikon 80-400. I always carry it with the strap attached to the lens and not the camera, otherwise I am sure that this heavy lens will distort the lens mount.

Good luck with it, I think it should perform well for you.
