Default February Theme: Eye Level American Wigeon

Got this frame as a Wigeon was emerging from a dark patch of water. Please don't tell me I need to extract more detail from the black water!!!!!!!!

Great portrait Doug! This is a work of art IMO! The black bg and water is very dramatic! And, black is black! I suppose some of the whites aren't there in the jpg but to me, white is white also!

Doug, Dan is right....this is like a painting. loved the wavy reflection here. perfect angle of the bird...whites look very good to me. I think a tad color sat boost might make it better. Green is nice but the body color seems a little muted.

Good idea Kaustubh. Here's a repost with a saturation boost and some additional sharpening.

Color looks much better now...but I prefer the body sharpness in the OP. Those wet feathers tend to look oversharpened( needle-like) and I frequently exclude them from the selection. Head sharpness is definitely better in the repost.

    Doug:

Excellent shooting angle, techs, I think the black background makes for dramatic waterfowl images. I often use the same style for loons.

I might consider just a sliver more room ahead, but works as is.

    Cheers

Doug, sweet image. You know I love this kind of stuff, and it works great here. I would have done an HDR to capture more detail in the blacks.

    Cheers,

Lovely, Doug. Black BG and water really works. Plumage detail and iridescence is great.

    Doug,
I really like the repost. Doesn't look over sharpened to me. Very stately bird.
Only nit is that the water detail is just not there for me.
    Congratulations!

Awesome low angle and that BG really makes the Wigeon pop off the screen gorgeous shot.

Doug, you nailed the repost, and I like how the wigeon stands out against the dark BG. If this were mine, I would maybe take a touch off the bottom. Well captured.

Bird looks great with plenty detail in the white, sharp and awesome pose. I feel it is a bit big in the frame and black BG doesn't work for me.

Like the repost Doug, colours and detail show up more. As mentioned dark background makes for a dramatic image.
