Another image from the other day. Australian Pelican.

Maybe a bit tight? - I have added canvas to the top and left of the image.

    This is full frame plus some - 7d, 500mm +1.4 ext, 1/640 @ 6.3, 500iso. EV + 1 1/3.

    Thanks Tom

    Tom:

It is a snug crop, but it works for me as posted. Nice exposure, sharpness, neat texture on back of head, interesting pupil. Are they all elliptical like this one?

    Cheers

Great job on the exposure, Tom. Love the detail and textures. The pastels of the eye and bill are lovely. I might darken down the pale spots in the BG. Randy, the yellow is a fleshy eye ring leaving an ellipital surround to the eye. The iris is dark and I can't see the pupil on my dodgy work monitor so I might be missing what you are seeing.

I see what you mean adout the background Tony - hadn't noticed it. Amazing what you miss and need others to point out.

I think Tony explained the eye well. They are very dark and not alot of detail - I have considered playing around doing a curves adjustment just on the eye but I like the blackness of it and it is pretty much what the bird looks like.I thought that the yellow may be a bit too yellow but left it.

I'm happy with the exposure of this one and was able to make a judgement about the overcast conditions, checked the histogram then made the appropriate EV compensation. Learnt all this from AM's book.

Fantastic detail in this image. The exposure seems spot on. The photo has a lovely creamy texture. The eye does look dark on my monitor, but if you feel it is an accurate representation of what you observed, then it is best to leave it as is. As already mentioned by Tony, those white spots in the BG have to go.

I generally like tight crops, but to my eye this image would benefit from a bit more room all around.

Tom, well exposed, and I like the overall softer colours captured here. Good detail throughout, and I feel it would have been easy to have added a bit of canvas to the right.

excellent head shot with great details, adding catch light will even make it stronger IMO.

Lovely image with great detail, like the pastel colours and another vote for the tight crop.
