This coyote had injured one foot so it couldn't spring straight up for its pounce as its mate did. Unfortunately, the more athletic mate was a bit far for me to get a good shot of. There are a few blades of grass that I would have liked to have cloned out, but I am not that skilled and felt that I would do more damage than good.
The muted yellow and blue work in this image. Good timing. Do you have a bit more of the frame above the coyote? It may be a bit too tight a crop as is. Also, the blades do not bother me.
hey Tom, love the posture of the coyote - and I like the grass - I don't think it obscures the coyote at all. The look of concentration on its face is so strong I kept looking in front of it in the picture trying to find the prey - this is a beautiful photo!
Tom- Wonderful timing of your capture..the diagonal angle of the coyote adds not only interest but strength to the image. The kicked up snow also ads action. Must have been a hoot watching those two.

Bill, I am not completely sure what they were hunting. I think they were pocket gophers, they appeared to be too big for voles. The coyotes would walk along in the snow and then cock their heads to listen for them under the snow and when they would locate one, the coyote would pounce into the snow, bury their heads under the snow for awhile and then come up with a critter. Yes, they were successful, catching approximately 10 between them while I watched. The other coyote was a more classic straighter up pounce but kinda far for a good shot. I also had shots of this guy completely horizontal in the air but the focus was not very good.
Tom,
I hear what the others are saying about the extra canvas above the coyote - but the long rectangle gives a feeling of distance and it unconsciously makes me think about how far he is leaping. a browser crop in the blue, just above the line of brown grass in your repost looks good too (and puts him perfectly on the diagonal. interesting....) just curious, is there any extra on the right edge?
