Loving the vibe and activity on the forum at the moment...I will do my part to keep posting a variety of wildlife...

This one also has to be dedicated to everyone who's ever tried to get a good photo of this shy and swift little antelope.

Taken in the Northern Kruger on a rainy day. This one stood still for a variety of portraits - got them all: mug shots, full body shots...

    Techs:
    Nikon D300s with 200-400mm VR @ 400mm
    f4.0 @ 1/250 SS @ ISO-400

Looks like the mythical jack-a-lope here in the U.S. Beautiful portrait of an animal I haven't seen. Looks like it has a scar on its face or is that part of its morphology? Nice!

    Morkel,

    Thanks for the dedication

Nice to see one of these well captured.

Far more attention should be paid to these beautiful creatures, unfortunately they are not "marketed" very well.

If you do not mind I will try to explain the "scar".

Most animals like to scent mark, and many use faeces, urine or liquid sprays rom specialised scent glands. In the case of many antelopes the scent is deposited via the "pre orbital scent gland", in Morkels image what you see is the opening to this. The marking invoves poking one of those "pesky" little twigs through the opening and depositing the scent on the twig, when you this action is seen it looks very bizarre and almost painful.

You have some nice portraits of the smaller antelope which I find very hard to achieve. The background is lovely and soft and the eyes are shown well.

Ken, I think you have explained the scent glands very well.

Nice work Morkel. Composition is classic head and should with a pleasing BG.

Ken, thanks for the info on the scent glads.

Very nice portrait of this little guy Morkel. Nice exposure and sharpness with good separation from the bg. Head placed in the green foiliage makes it stand out very well. Good sharpness as well. Nice work.
