Northern pintail drake, near the shoreline - his pose struck me as one of those "photo moments" while he was scratching his head.

    40D + 500L f4.5 + non-reporting 1.4x, on monopod; very nearly full frame. ISO 640, f6.3, 1/800.

Hi Allen - Like the pose and the techs look solid, like the catchlight in the eye.
I would not be surprised if the reds were clipped just a little - Have a look at your histogram in particular the red channel - might not be by much.
    Sharpness and detail look good.
    Keep em coming :)

Ah no, that's not a pose... he is saluting you! :) I like the image. It has a nice, natural feeling to it, probably because of the not smooth water. Very nice!

Hi Allen, I think if you expanded this into a square panel showing different "states" of the birds behaviour i.e. a study of behaviour, that would add an interesting element in lieu of a single moment in time.

I may borrow my own idea and try this out myself.

    Chris:

I have a sequence of images with this character, as you suggest, but haven't spent the time to make a poster of it. (I've done that just once, for the different hummingbirds that visited my feeder on our loft deck/patio.)

Hi Allen, I'd be interested in seeing your laid out sequence of images for the Humming Bird.

    Chris:

it's rough; I never got around to figuring out better/real borders between image cells in Elements, but I liked the images organized that way so much I uploaded it anyway.

    Here's a link to it:

Thank you for sharing the link. Very nice start. I think perhaps placing the darker ones in the corners might help w/ the balance. As to Arraying them, I think both lightroom and photoshop have the facility for making contact sheets, this might help simplify positioning. As to border colors, that's a tough call, I'd just try something that complements salmon color, perhaps royal blue to royal green. Alternatively, one could make little B&W silhouettes of the birds and rim them around the photos. Just spit balling here..
