Here an image that I created last November. I photographed this big buck from the shoulder of the road. and it was in a field in a 16 square kilometre piece of federal government land near my home.

You can see where he's broken his left antler at the tip. A doe was nearby so he was keeping an eye on her.

Canon 40D and Sigma 50-500 mm at 500mm on Induro Carbonflex tripod.

    1/80 seconds, F6.30, ISO - 640
Flash - Flash not fired, compulsory flash mode

Cropped to about 65% of full frame.

I love the soft colours you have captured here and the tonal range across the image is very nice. Shame about the broken antler, and ideally it would have been better with the other ear forward as well. I think the slower ss was against you but overall I find it a very pleasing (if not crisp) image. TFS

Very nice buck Stephen. He is a bit soft as Hilary has eluded to. Perhaps a bit of selective sharpening and slight contrast boost would help here.

    Stephen,

    Agree with the above points,
On my monitor I also detect a slight magenta cast. I

I have had a little play with your image I hope you do not mind.

Reduced magenta by 3 points in Colour balance, a boost to contrast and intensity, then a round of sharpening in Smart sharp, 100% at 0,1.

Ken you've really captured everyon's comments and observations in your re-post which I acknowledge is much better than the original. I have several similar frames in the series so I'll go back to see if one is shaper than the posted one.

    Thanks again everyone.
