Oryx duels are always nice to photograph - pity they often happen at the harshest time of day.
These two in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park really hammered each other, kicking up spurious amounts of dust in the process. I converted to B&W to enhance the motion and the high-key effect of the dust.
Techs:
Canon 7D with 100-400mm L IS USM @ 400mm
f8.0 @ 1/1000 SS @ ISO-400
nearly full frame, cropped about 2% space from RHS, LHS and top
Morkel - unfortunately from the POV it is difficult to tell that they are sparring rather than the one behind simply having its head down. I'd prefer more room below too. The conversion looks good.
as you know I am always experimenting and this one had potential for me, and in a way I still like it, but maybe I will use it in a "series", as I do have ones with a better "face-off" position, Ken :)
Steve - yes here he was veering away but the battle continued for a few minutes more.
Clear enough to me that there is a ruccus going on, all that dust is there for a reason . Agree a more conventional head to head position will be stronger. These guys lend themselve well to b/w.

Hi Morkel, I just got to see this one now. The dust is great, and adds drama, and I guess having spent time watching oryx it was instantly clear to me what was going on, but I seem at odds with a lot of the other comment writers in that regard. The B and W works well, if anything I would have liked a touch more space below..
cheers
