    Here's a spring cub I saw in Yellowstone in the spring of 2009. Canon 40D, Canon 300mm f/4. 1/400 sec. at f/4. EC +1/3. ISO 500. C&C welcome.

Hi Jim, these little guys for me, really do command that thought, wish I could take you home just gorgeous. Resting on that log does, 'take it over the top'. Really like the look, pose/stance and illustrates well those great claws, ideal for foraging and opening up shell fish and old rotten logs, full of juicy insects and grubs.

Perhaps running some NR on the BG might be worth a thought? I know cropping is all so personal, but tried a tighter crop above the head, along the log in the BG, WDYT? But you might think it's too tight.

Jim, on the log a real plus. Since he is looking right, I would suggest a crop from the right to just enough to get rid of the cut end of the log.

Very appealing image, love the claws and the way the cub is looking. Concur with suggestions by Steve and Robert.

Great to see all four paws.

I would agree to crop away the cut end of the log.

    Hello All,

Thanks for all your comments. This little cub and its sibling were so cute. Like Steve, I fantasized about picking them up. They weren't much bigger than footballs.

I hadn't thought about the cut end of the log. The next time I work it I'll try it with the cut end cropped off. I'll try a bit off the top as well. I'm likely to print this again and when I do I'll look into noise in the BG as well.

    Again, thanks,

Another vote for Robert's crop suggestion.
