This spot didn't strike me as a very comfortable place to dine: between the barbed wire and the top of the wire fence.
50D + 500L f4.5 + 1.4x; ISO 1000, ss 1/250, f6.5. Minimal crop (no tail, too close); tweaked tones, tamed highlights in Lightroom.

Hey, Allen. Uncomfortable is right! Exposure and sharpness look good. In normal circumstances, I would say he's a bit cramped in the frame, but I actually think that helps in this setting.
BTW, I see you use a 500 f/4.5 L with your 50D. Are you able to AF with that 1.4x? With the price of the new 500 at ~10K and the old one f/4 pretty steep as well, I've been considering hunting down an old f/4.5 (or a Sigma 500 f/4.5).
Ian: I use a non-reporting Tamron TC with the 500 f4.5, so it will still AF. I recently discovered, though, that there's no free lunch. I just assumed that TC cost me 1 stop or so of light; finally did some testing and found it's more like 3-4 stops.
So now I usually carry it with me, but only use it when I absolutely need the reach, since it makes BIF images just about impossible, losing that much light.
He's in a tight spot for sure! Exposure and sharpness look good. How did you determine your tc is costing you 3-4 stops. I have the Tamron SP 1.4 TC, it works as reported with 1 stop of light loss. I use it on my 400 afs2.8 and have used it on my 80-400vr as well. Sounds like you may have something wrong.

Same subject, same light, the "sunny 16 rule" was spot on without the TC; whereas it took f7.1 for proper exposure with it.
Interesting. Have you tried a different converter yet?
I have not tried any other TCs.
I like this tight image, shows the tight squeeze very effectively.
Lovely tight frame here , VWD

Allen - very effective to show the tight squeeze and balancing act. Nice sharpness.
