    Default Common Duiker

Not enough photos are seen of these little guys. The Afrikaans name "Duiker" translates literally as "diver" but was chosen to describe the way they "dive into thickets" when you approach them rather than their swimming abilities.

This was a rare moment with the antelope standing still and staring back at me before "diving" into the bush.

Captured in a lush green summer in the Kruger National Park, 2009.

    Techs:
    Nikon D300s with 200-400mm VR @ 290mm
    f4.0 @ 1/800 SS @ ISO-800

Would echo the young Harshads thoughts here Morkel and certainly, the green, is very lush. Nicely framed within the comp too.

I also like the inclusion of the caterpillar within the vegetation.:eek::eek:

    Morkel,

First a Sharpes Grysbok now this you were lucky to find let alone to remain static for long enough. It maybe called "common" but actally its a very rare sighting not running into the distance.

Could it take a little more sharpening on the head?

Just proves the quality of Nikon bet you were really photographing the caterpillar, not the Duiker

I love the Mohawk haircut Morkel. Thou I like the surroundings a lot I also feel this would be a great vertical. At least he did not live up to his name before you got an image.

And congrats on the new arrival.

    Hi Morkel,

Although I like the comp as shown, I can see Roberts view that a portrait would also work.

    Great lookback pose.

You picked the wrong lens for the caterpillar !

    Cheers

Never managed even a blurry photo of a duiker so am very envious Morkel. This is a nice depiction of the animal in its environment and although I wouldn't have seen it without the heads up, I really like the caterpillar.

Morkel - very nice and very lush. I too like the look back pose. Nice of the duiker to wander in to your caterpillar shot (although I confess not sure I would have noticed without Steve's comment).

    Rachel
