Default Live View focusing in Bright Sunlight or Dark of Night?

Since getting the 50D a year or so ago, I've been using the LiveView mode to manually focus all my landscape and macro shots because of the greater precision it gives me. I've been very happy with the results. There are two scenarios that are difficult for me and I'm looking for tips on how to deal with.

When shooting in bright, bright sunlight (especially if there's snow everywhere) I cannot see the LCD screen clearly enough to use it for focusing. All I can think of doing is covering my head with something like you see in pictures of the old-timers. At worst case I can switch back to autofocus, but I don't like the results for distant landscape shots.

The second is shooting at night. Either star trail shots, lightning photos, or pictures where I'll be painting with light. Painting with light I'm just barely able to zoom in with LiveView while shining the light on the subject and focus. All other scenarios I'm unable to do this. Sometimes I'll see a plane in the far off distance and zoom in with LiveView and focus on that, but that's difficult and unreliable.

    All suggestions are welcome.

    Thanks.

Hi Eric. Check out the Hoodman Hood Loupe 3. http://www.hoodmanusa.com/products.asp?dept=1017. It is easy to attach and works quite well in bright light.

James, Thanks for the link. It looks like this is great for eliminating the glare while viewing images. How well does it work for trying to manually focus. It looks like I'd need one hand to hold the device, one to hold the camera, and one to focus. Or will it stay in place easily with my eye pressed up agains it?

    Thanks for your help.
