Default Winners and Losers - 1

Whilst not the big predators on the block, jackals hunt with tenacity and ruthlessness. We followed a pair of jackals as they hunted a Tommie fawn up to the inevitable disembowlment, despite the mother's determined efforts (of about 20 to 25 minutes) to fend them off.
This is one of the jackals taking the prize away whilst her mate defends them from another pair of jackals who were late to the party.

    Hilary,

I think you have a slight magenta cast here, reducing this and adding a linear contrast mask greatly improves this. I might also try to remove white dots (presumably flowers?)

    Thanks Harshad.

Thanks Ken, I'll have another look at the colour and see if I can improve it. I wondered about the flowers and decided to leave them but it's easy enough to get rid of them. Always hard to know which way to go.

I like the content here Hilary, but not sure about the processing on this one, looks a bit OTT which is unusual for you, might just backing off a little. It looks like a crop based on the nearest Jackal, is it? Certainly wouldn't add any more in Curves as it will choke even more detail.

If you do revisit this will drop you a line to try, let me know if it works.

    cheers

I know it is not always possible to get what we want, but for this image I would have liked to have had separation of the FG jackal with the BG ones.

Robert, separation was my greatest regret and although I have other images with that separation, the jackal with the kill is moving out of the frame so I thought this was the lesser of two evils.

Steve, will try your suggestions, thanks.

jackals always produce great sightings and images - lots of character. I've seen photos of a jackal wrestling a fully grown springbok to the ground and eventually making a meal of it.

nice scene here Hilary - looks a bit dark on my screen?

Thanks Morkel, you are right, I made it dark intentionally (something I am working on at the moment). Maybe overdone, not sure yet.

Hilary - interesting scene and story in the image. I haven't seen jackals hunt, I tend to think of them as scavengers. I agree it seems to have a bit of a magenta cast. Did you get any of the action in the bg in focus?

Thanks Rachel, I'm not sure what I have yet as I'm still cataloguing. I'm just pulling individual shots as I go to relieve the boredom of keywords and collections!

Great documentary image. Like what is going on in the background, with the jackal looking on.

A great story telling image Hilary.

I won't comment on the colours etc as I am not on my "normal" screen.

Thanks Dan & Austin, the image quality is just not good enough over the whole series. Really needed a longer lens to get closer to the action so am having to crop too much and in the low light I just can't get enough recovery. Thanks for all the comments, appreciated as always.
