    Default Ruddy duck

At Heron's Head Park; he just resurfaced, so he has lots of big water drops on his body.

50D + 500L; f5.6, 1/640, ISO 400. Same/similar harsh light to the surf scoter I posted earlier, but using Arthur's pp tips on blacks and whites, this wasn't as problematic, I don't think (of course, this bird has more tones and less black).

Hi Allen - Like the pose - good head turn and eye contact.
Might crop some from the bottom - lot of negative space there that I dont think adds anything to the overall composition.
Whites look a little bright though not technically over - Softer light would have given you a better result - but all in all this is not bad.
Looking forward to seeing more :)

Nice pose and I love the blue dapples in the water. The cheek looks a bit hot but I'm still struggling with dark and white birds exactly like this.

It would be great to see more detail in the bird with a tighter crop and larger posted image. Love the beautiful pastel-blue water.

Sorry for the newbie question: How do I post larger (or correct maximum filesize) if I'm using my own online gallery link?

I tried the next larger size file link when I originally uploaded, and this site says it was too large to post.

That works! Remember Alan, your image can be 1024 wide or 800 pixels high and 200kb in size. Yours is under these limits by quite a margin. As you are a BPN member (thanks for that!), you have the privilege of uploading images to the BPN site rather than providing a link to one already posted.

I like the recrop. You can really see the subject now. Drops of water are nicely visible. You were fighting the harsh light here Allen. Not much you can do other than stay in doors and wait for good light. Well done on the repost.

    Thanks, John.

I checked the file, and that image was taken at 3:10pm, Jan 22 - so I didn't think the light was or should be as harsh as it turned out to be.
