I took this on the Colorado ski slopes last weekend. Used some nuts to bait the Gray Jay. Adjusted contrast and sharpened. Should I add additional canvas to the top?
Gray (Canada) Jays are great birds Steven. This image has potential but needs some post processing to brighten it up and sharpen. I hope you don't mind but I took your advice and added some canvas on top, then recropped. Also brightened up with Levels- middle slider and sharpened. This really brought out detail in the eye which was lurking in the OP. The image came up pretty well I think. I left some peanuts on the snow but you could consider removal. Look forward to seeing more.
John, I think that looks great! Like the added canvas and brightness. Always afraid I may over sharpen the image. Couldn't originally decide if I wanted to remove the nuts on the snow.
Steven- the best way to sharpen is by eye. In Photoshop's Smart sharpen or Unsharp Mask you get a preview of a portion of the image at 100%, pixel for pixel. This is the way to judge it. If it looks good to you and does not show halos or that "scratchiness" that comes from too much sharpening, then you have hit the sweet spot. For sharp images out of the camera, resampled for BPN, I use Smart sharpen Remove lens blur, 75-100% at 0.3 or 0.4 pixels. Again though, ultimately it's what your eye tells you that counts.
