Whooper temporarily aborts takeoff to allow for traffic crossing
Tried very hard to get this one and did get him in the eye this time.
Wish the wingtip had missed his face and look back would of course improved it.
I may try again tomorrow - hope the wind is opposite lol

Man, you are unlucky with these birds' bills...now you don't have the dark spot behind the bill, but a wingtip in front of it!! Actually that front wing obstructing most of the neck is unfortunate. Good timing on the sliding arrival. Looks like there was another swan in front of it from the water action.
Check your local weather forecast for wind conditions so you'll know ahead of time what it will be like .
Nice action shot!
Just wondering why you chose to put the EV at +.33? I don't understand evaluative metering very well but I would have thought that if you had decreased the EV (to -.33 for example) that you would get more details in the white feathers of the birds. Did you crop the image?
I'm not sure if I should be asking this on this forum or not...
Good luck tomorrow!

You seem to be having a touch time with wind direction here which I am sorry to see for you. It is so frustrating to find such a great subject and have the weather not be conducive. Unfortunately, at this angle the bird's head is not only partially obstructed but also doesn't appear sharp. Great that you got the touch down. Hope you go back to try again with better wind direction.
Trying to expose with the histogram as far to right as possible without clipping, running on manual as well.suspect might have lost foot if at 0. SS was OK. I really, really dont like noise in darks, at 800 ISO my 40D produces crazy amounts - comment as to why anyone???
Wind, well this was the same day as before but hopefully will change for next time; crop moderate, head looks OK to me, catchlight clearly seen, there is a small patch of BG noise just off the top which doesnt help so I will SS again
Richard. Heres the problem. You are likely shooting in harsh light (high contrast) and although exposing to the right is a great way to mininize noise, in high contrast light you have hardly any room to work with. To show what I'm talking about I threw together the included graphic. If you notice in low contrast light , which occurs with cloudy or overcast skys, there is far less light on the right and left sides of the histogram, and you can shift everything to the right considerably and leave the nasty noise producing area on the left( I tried showing this area on the histograms with the grayish grainy gradient) Of course you shift everything back in PP. An added benifit is that if you do clip some of the highlights, as shown in the bottom pary of the graphic, it likely can be recoved if not too severe. In high contrast light recovery of even minor clipping is much less likely. So I'd be watching the weather report for the chances it will be cloudy, as well as the wind direction. Hope this is helpful. Regards~Bill
