    Default Another High ISO Deer

Boredom from hard drive culling and a lack of shooting time and subjects for the last month or so has me experimenting. Found this doe well after sunset during a drive this weekend and wanted to see how far I could push things. I've taken worse pictures with better techs and besides, I want to make sure I'm ready when I see Bigfoot on that distant ridge at sunset . Blue BG is shaded mountainside, 7D, 400DO +2xTC, f10, 1/80s, ISO 12800, +2/3 EC, HH from vehicle, burst mode (only one of series that was somewhat sharp), 40-50% of frame.

    Steve,

The techs say" stretched too far", but the outcome is surprising, the subject has come out remarkably well.

I am sure it would look worse if printed or in a larger format, you can definitely see some noise, but, it is no worse than early colour film.

It is a pity about the sticks.

Surely you're joking about the outcome of a print. I'm confident it would make a fine wallet size picture

Not too bad for that iso Steve. From what I recall, doesn't a print tend to hide the noise we see on screen as the ink bleeds a bit (inkjet prints).

I think you are probably correct

I've heard that before too Todd but its been so long since I've printed anything that I don't know for sure. I intend to make some prints again once I get my monitor calibrated. I'm curious to see how some of these high ISO shots (1600 ones) turn out as 8x10s and possibly larger.

Hi Steve, these recent postings are great to see what happens when using high ISO and all handled very nicely. Just proves if you get the Histogram right it all falls into place.

The OOF grass doesn't worry me apart from the one that runs over the chest as that is more 'visible'. The BG works well to through the subject out.

Matt paper will obscure the noise somewhat.

Well done in the IQ given the high ISO Steve.

I would try one more round of sharpening on the deer.

Steve - interesting experiment. Please let us know the results of your print tests too.

Sweet image. I'd try printing on art paper which may help with any noise. Impressed with the results you've achieved.

Looks lovely in this small presentation. Would be interesting to see how it holds as a large print.

I am surprised and pleased by the results not only of the high ISO but the 400DO with the 2x TC. I have tried my 1D3 with the 400DO and 2x combo and have been less than thrilled. Did you use a tripod during this burst?

    Thank you for sharing.

    Thanks again for the comments.

    Robert,
Thanks for the tip about matte prints. I'll have to keep that in mind when I try out a test.

    Marina,
I use the 2xTC pretty regularly with my DO. Most of the time on a tripod with MLU and a cable release. This particular time was handheld and with the IS on. I went with the burst figuring at least one would be a little sharp.

Hey Steve, well done for experimenting. Ive often wondered myself how high I can push the ISO on my 50D. Furthermore testing out prints should give you some interesting results. The OOF sticks are not an issue.
