I made a bad mistake with this one. Even though it has been said many times to shoot bif's in manual mode I was in Av mode.

The bird was underexposed by quite a bit and loss of detail and noise is apparent.

    7D, 500mm, f/4, 1/6400, ISO 800.

The upside is, Dave, it has a very painterly feel and look, instead.

I commend you in not having an excessive crop, which makes noise much more noticeable. Very nice flight capture! regards~Bill

I don't care what happened in the making of this image Dave, it is very, very good. I would disagree, the noise is not apparent (did you run any NR in ACR or elsewhere?). I don't know how you could improve this image. Love it- composition, light, colour etc. We have SEOWs locally and it would be a dream to get an image like this.

Just had another look and the pattern on the upper wing is very attractive. I guess we can give the credit to evolution on that one!

I can see quite a bit of noise in the underwing but I agree that you have a lovely image here and you did a very nice job on many counts. The way the edge of the wings fades into the soft BG is beautiful and I also like the larger crop...you really get a feeling of solitude with this one.

Chalk it up as a learning experience and hang on to the image...you never know when PS will come up with a way to fix it for you!

Very nice flight image Dave. Nice pose, good detail and like the eye. Yeah, you may have been able to get a better exposure, but still pretty good capture.

I like the crop as well..the bird is clearly en route and a closer crop might have weakened that emotion....I like most, focused on his eyes which gives it a special feel that you would lose if it were cropped as if it were a field guide image... jmho

    Thanks everyone. Much appreciated.

John you are right about the colouring and evolution. When they sit down in the grass they just disappear.

I did run abit of NR in CS4 on the bird. I ran NR, had a mask and then painted over the mask with a 30% brush and toggled back and forth to see when and where the details were all back in where it mattered.

I think I learn more from making mistakes than from doing things right.

    Dave
