They are tough! Lighting is nice and even, composition and head angle are excellent. A lower angle would have been better. The subject is a little soft on my monitor. I tried some sharpening in Ps and the image did not respond well so I you went as far as you could go there Ian.
Thank you so much, folks. It was nice finally to get one to cooperate. Even so, he was a bit far for my 400 so there is some crop here. That probably explains the softness, John, although I didn't think it was too bad.
Great image. I agree on the head being a bit soft, but that may actually be due to water retained on the plumage which is something I've brought up here before. I have a decent Shoveler shot with a head that simply looks like it's made out of plastic due to water sheen.
Good point and thanks, Paul. I have an image of a pair of otters where one is sharp and the other isn't simply because the second just came out of the pool.
Way to persevere, Ian! I definitely think this is your strongest Grebe image yet. The sharpness of the water drops are very nice and the hint of color in the water below his head is lovely.
I like the shot as well. those guys are tough to catch just right and you did..and its clear that he is eyeing you and ready to dive again! and I like the drops as it adds realism to me
IMO The point made about really wet birds/otters looking soft is a good one...I have a teal image that I took last week that looks like its been varnished.... all due to the fact that it had just "dabbled"..including the drips from the bill
