Every month John and I will introduce a different topic in Bird Biology/Ornithology and invite open discussion.
Starting in February we will launch the topic: The Evolution of Ornithology.
For example - The evolution of birds in North American Ornithology.
“The first known scientific list of birds was compiled by Aristotle (384-322 B.C.). His description of the habits of about 74 of the 170 species he recorded were good enough that we can recognize these birds today.” (Handbook of Bird Biology - Princeton University Press – p. H19).
Today, bird watching has become big business. Bird feeders, bird foods, baths, binoculars, field guides, magazines, computer software, birding festivals all contribute to a multi-billion dollar industry. This is all part of bird watching, bird conversation and the age of new technology in the field of Ornithology.
This is an international site and I am anxious to learn more from our friends throughout the globe.

Jeff: Should the conversation be maintained in a single thread that you launch, or are you encouraging people to start new threads throughout February?
This is a great idea. It's both an interesting topic an a reminder about the concept of "on the shoulders of giants."
Paul great questions. Long threads are too hard to follow, might I suggest posting topics separately unless they can be combined. With the main-topic changing every 30 days hopefully this will be manageable. We can always take a different direction if needed.
