I recently spent Sept-Nov in Haines, Alaska to photograph the Bald Eagles, and I'm finally getting some images worked up. It was very challenging as there is not a lot of light there that time of year, and mostly cloudy, dim, days
I captured this eagle as it stole the food from another eagle.
Sharpness and exposure look great. Good powerful pose - love the dipping head. I also love the water texture - and its transition to land. The comp is just a tad tight on the main subject, but still pleasing. The OOF eagle, although a bit distracting, does serve as a story-telling element when combined with your fish-stealing tale
After looking at your image and reviewing Daniel's critique, I second it. Your front eagle is sharp and well exposed. I agree on a bit more room. I might consider cleaning up just a little bit of the BG (if you are not opposed to this), esp the spots directly to the right of the rear bird and to the right of the front wing. The catch is a nice plus, and I do like the story this picture tells.
I'll be looking forward to seeing more from your Alaska adventure.
I think it is really good. It tells the story to me.
A bit more room on the bottom would have been better but I like the OOF eagle in the background as it adds to the story.
The head is at a great angle, looks vicious and determined. Nice shot.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I have applied the critique to the image, with these results, and I feel the composition is improved. Thanks for the help !!
Matt
The Bald Eagle is a challenging bird to photograph with its dramatic contrast.
You've captured feather details very well here. The half eaten fish in the talons
of the bird gives insight into its behavior as a scavenger more than predator.
The eye follows around the image well with your reworked version appealing.
