During the winter of 2007-08 a Hermit Thrush overwintered here in Ottawa. Three years later, another one is currently overwintering...at the EXACT SAME SPOT!!
This guy is replenishing its energy by eating morsels of suet that have fallen off to the ground. A survivor, it endured temps of -29C (-20F, without factoring in the wind) earlier this week. A fresh layer of snow provided clean surfaces where normally debris from nearby feeders litter the floor.
Canon 40D + 100-400 @400mm, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/250s., f/6.3, ISO 800, natural light, handheld, just about FF.
I like the coloring on this little guy! Nice pose and composition. Perch is pleasing and the little bit of snow on it makes it even better. The detail in the eye is great. Well done.
Daniel, you're one of the few photographers who make me wish I lived in a snowy area in winter. You're getting a lot of good work done up there in the Great White North. This shot is technically sound, aesthetically pleasing, and ornithologically valuable.
I know that the point of this site is mainly about birds being photographed but I think we could have a forum dedicated to amazing perches and great snow. Daniel could moderate this forum - alas I don't recall it ever snowing in Sydney.
Sweet little icon of the North Woods, beautifully captured against the white background. Wonderful color coordination between bird and perch; nicely exposed and great detail.
This might be the same bird returning to a favorite wintering spot? It seems common to find a bird returning to the same bush year after year (here in CA at least!).
Daniel, I like how you manage to get full frame shots of small birds with 400mm :-) This one is quite perfect...the exposure, bird angle, HA, details...superb.
