    Default Marching with purpose

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy late afternoon. We had been with a small herd of elephants watching them drink and play. Several young calves in particular were having fun. Then, as mothers tend to do, play time was over and they set off for wherever they had to go.
    Full frame, hand held, 7D; 100-400 @ 150; 1/320 @ f5.6; ISO 400

Slight movement in the mother's trunk and in the calf's feet … too much to make the image worth anything or can I get away with it?

Hi Hilary, this does convey a 'parental' feel about it, with that guiding trunk.

Slight movement in the mother's trunk and in the calf's feet … too much to make the image worth anything or can I get away with it?
Personally, without see the original I think it's too minimal to worry about, plus they are on the move, so providing the head of the baby elephant is sharp, movement in both legs & trunk adds to the feel. I don't suppose you have a shot like this but without the mother's foot in it, I just like the idea of the baby and this guiding trunk coming into play.

Just looking at it on the laptop, but wonder if it could do with a hint more in curves & USM? Will drop you a line.

nice feel and story here! I agree with Steve - the blur is justifiable and makes it work, yet I too would have liked to see only the trunk of the mother in the image (or else more of her)

nice colour on them - were they dust-bathing?
    seems sharp on my monitor

The very slight blur is not an issue at all for me, adds a little more sense of movement to the calf's legs position. Although I wish there wasn't an overlap of the mother's foot with the calf's, I like it being there along with the trunk. The trunk is keeping it on the path, the foot says "keep it moving".

Thanks for the feedback. Very interesting as I chose this particular frame because of the mother's foot which I liked because of the size and way it is hovering above the ground. Isn't photography a wonderful and contrary thing.

Yes, but it can also be refreshing too Hilary.

The movement in the feet doesn't bother me Hilary as they are moving parts and it adds to the directional message that this image gives.

The overlapping feet is the minor niggle for me. If mums foot was there and I could see all four of the calfs feet and a complete tail then I would keep mums foot in the image for the reasons you have given.

    Cheers

Thanks Austin, that probably explains the foot dilemma as well as anything. I'm glad to have other photographers to bounce these images off, if it isn't working here it probably won't work elsewhere either.

Nice moment captured Hilary. My thoughts are pretty well summed up above. Slight motion blur a non-issue for me as well.
