    Default Short-eared Owl

I took this photo a couple days ago. As I was watching the owl I noticed a short distance away a Shrike popping in and out of the grass and seaweed while feeding on insects.

I took a couple photos of the owl, turned away to see what the Shrike was up to and the owl flew up 10 or 15 feet to sit on a fence post, and I missed the bit of action.

    Next time.

    7D, 500 mm, f/4, 1/200, ISO400.

    Photo is cropped.

I am very jealous, only time I see Owls they are way up in trees and behind branches.
Great pose, eye contact, BG and detail. If IQ will hold up I think I would like a tighter crop.
Overall I feel the image may be a touch bright or maybe a boost in contrast on the body to help it pop out some more.

wow, owls and shrikes at the same time - I'm jealous too. What an incredible face. I agree with Peter, wonder if a little less on the bottom and right would pop the gorgeous owl a bit more - or maybe the image a little less bright. But I like the infocus grasses on the right against that background ----

Great capture and I love the off-center comp. Never get to see owls in my area . I'm jealous. Did get to see a pair of bald eagles today. Both in heavily branched tree. Decent picture not possible but I will return.

    Hope you get more owls.

Wow! Dave, that's the prettiest owl I have ever seen. takes my breath away. I would be very happy to have a photograph like that hanging on my wall. Only ones we see here are the Great Horned always high in the trees.

Thanks for sharing your nice presentation.

Dave: what a great find, out in the open like that! I've never seen a short-eared in person - looks like a devil's head.

Gus: that definitely makes the owl pop more - I like it.

Dave, congratulations on a great image. I love owls and their eyes and this is a beautiful shot.

Gus, the repost is beautiful. The darker background and increased contrast is very nice. WOW.

Thanks Gus for doing that. It looks much better. If you remember where Ladner is Gus, this is just a bit away on the salt marsh near Boundary Bay airport.

There are not nearly as many SE Olws around this year as normal or at least I have not seen nearly as many. I was quite lucky to spend some time with this one.
