    Default iPad for travel

I will be traveling next month and generally I bring a laptop to download my pictures off my memory cards. I don't have a laptop anymore, but I do have an iPad. Has anyone used their iPad for storing pictures? If I understand right you cannot edit RAW pictures, but I just need a place to put them. My iPad has 64 gb of memory of which about 59 are still available. Are there any issues with getting the pictures back off the iPad? I imagine you would just sync it with a desktop.
    Thanks,
    Asta

I don't think this is possible as the ipad syncs with a mother itunes program. The itunes in turn gets its info from a computer and not a memory card.

Another option is a netbook. The new 12-inch screens by ASUS (maybe others) give a good compromise in size and weight. About 3.5 pounds for computer+charger. And you have full functionality because it is a full computer.

Yet another option is take enough memory cards that you don't need to re-use them. That is the lightest, smallest option.

In general on a photo trip, I take enough cards to never re-use and a laptop to back everything up. I come home with at least 4 copies: memory cards, laptop hard drive, 2 USB hard drives.

Roger is on to something. But still another option is the MacBook Air, either the 11 or 13.3 inch version.

Linda and I have the 13.3 inch model that provides 7-hour battery life, wonderful graphics, and the ability to add Photoshop and other applications, to send web images while we travel. After downloading our daily photo harvest to our computer, we simultaneously back up our files onto two Western Digital Passport external drives. And our computer is amazingly thin, weighs a mere 2.9 pounds, and has 128 GB flash memory capacity with at least 92 GB free!

The problem with the iPad as I see it is that it encompasses only half of the digital world. With it, you can view the world and communicate with it at a relatively primitive level. But the creativity side, which computers have, is missing.

I suggest that you get a real computer, either per Roger's suggestion or mine, and go for it! The experiences you have with your camera cannot be repeated in the future, and I think that you should handle them in the best way possible.

    Default I agree with Norn

I agree with Norm especially concerning the use of the iPod. I love my iPod, but it really isn't a computer as such. It does not surprise me that people are trying to make the IPad something that is is not. Maybe, if the next version has a USB port or some other port it might be useful for saving images.

Another possibility might be the Epson P-600. I find this to be a good backup devise.

Default iPad storage on the road...

Hi Asta: I THINK this should be possible. There are still some issues, and I'm trying to work through them. iPad came out with a camera adapter that allows you to load photos into its Photos app via USB or SD card. I've successfully loaded some raw images from my Canon 5D, but Photos seems to choke a bit on the raw images and only able to load a few at a time. Posts elsewhere suggest that re-trying is the best way to get these to load. Still working on getting them off the iPad into my computer... Will post more if I get it worked out, as I'm heading to CR soon, severely weight limited, and thinking of taking my iPad rather than my Air...

If the photographs are really important (an assignment, a job,...) then the laptop goes on the trip along with 2 external hard drives. I worry about loss of card, laptop, not only from theft, but from data corruption. Back up is very very important.

My own practice is to use a new empty card every day. So for a seven day trip I have 7 different high capacity card. I use this convention to know whats on my cards:

if they are empty they go in face up and with label facing me
if they are partially filled they go in sideways with label facing me
if they are full they go in upside down with label facing me
if they are damage the go in upside down and the front label on the CF or SD cars is facing away from me.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. Seems odd not to have a laptop, but trying to budget for a new tele lens this year. Having said that saving the pictures is paramount, so laptop it is...

As a Mac fan, get the MacBook Air - fantastic little piece of equipment. Loads in seconds and the flash based hard drive system is lightening fast. You CAN load images from your camera into an iPad - just for the record. You can get a USB plug (small white piece not much bigger than 2 postage stamps) that plugs into the power / sync cord socket on the bottom of the iPad. Then you just need a USB based card reader that works with your CF / SD or what ever card you are using. Lots of rumors about the next generation of iPad having a built in USB port. I've used it as a VIEWER - not a real storage device because I know JPEGs will lose quality with each generation and I suspect (don't know for a fact) that the pad may parse down the file size. It does make for a great viewer though. I used the iPad until I got the Air to check my shots by shooting Raw + JPEG and loaded only the JPEGs to check my images. I am not aware of an App designed for RAW images on the iPad. Now it has other purposes.

You are of course able to get at your images on an iPad without having to use iTunes. iPads synch with iPhoto and Aperture. My main concern with the current iPads is their capacity. I would need several 100 gigs of space to store images from a long (say 6 week) trip. If the new ones come out with a USB3 port and are able to use an external hard disk for storage then we are laughing. An iPad will never be a touch-screen Macbook but it is an attractive solution.

I agree with the comments on Macbook Air. A friend who has one of the new ones and has owned just about every Mac out there told me the other day that the Air was the best Mac he had ever owned. And the price is right on the new ones.

I have no direct experience with Netbooks but I have heard that the small screen size and resolution of many of them prohibit installation of software like Photoshop.

    John,
I have a netbook (asus eee pc 1201) and you can set the resolution to 1024 x 768 with is the minimum required for software like photoshop. The 1201 has something like 800 x 600 pixel native resolution, so the screen scrolls--very annoying.

But the 12-inch netbooks have more pixels, so are quite reasonable. I just got an Asus Lamborghini VX6 which has 1366 x 768 pixels, so holds photoshop just fine.

Thank you all for your suggestions. The MacBook Air is what I plan on getting. Having an iMac, getting a windows based laptop or netbook seems to just add another level of complication for me. I use external hard drives as back up and from my understanding they have to be formatted for Mac or Windows, not both. Am I wrong?

Macs can at least read and write to a FAT32 PC drive. My understanding is that if you format a drive in the native Mac format that it will run faster.

    You will love the Air.

Perhaps research the HyperDrive hard drive for iPad:
    http://www.hypershop.com/HyperDrive-...rive-s/183.htm

World's only iPad compatible USB hard drive
Stores and transfer to iPad up to 1TB of high definition videos and photos
Navigate hard drive directly with iPad
No special app or jailbreak required

I don't have one but do have a Hyperdrive Colorspace UDMA which was great for travel through Africa.

Default Successful use of an IPad for photos.

I have a Canon 50D and a 5D Mark II. I have used the iPad on 3 occasions now to store RAW photos (no editing). I can store approximately 2500-2600 Raw photos. I then upload them into Lightroom. The key is using the USP adapter and a card reader that does not use too much power from the iPad. I use a Lexar 24-in-1 Reader and you do have to play around with it sometimes as you do occasionally get a message about it using too much power. It takes about 10-15 minutes to download an 8 Gig CP card. I am very happy with the results although I ran out of room on my 4 week India trip as I shot 4100 photos.
