So I'm looking into geotagging images and would like to know if and how anyone here is accomplishing this. I'm shooting Nikon, so I know there are some options available for a receiver on the camera, which seems preferable to me since anything I can do in the field and not have to mess with later is a step ahead for me.
Having said that, are y'all using GPS receivers on your cameras with any luck in the field? Are you adding data later using aerial imagery, topo maps, etc.? Any thoughts on functionality of different receivers? The unleashed deal looks pretty cool-but you've got to have an additional receiver and I'd rather stay away from that. I've searched and only found a few threads on geotagging. Thanks for any insight y'all could provide.
Jason- One option I use, and which negates the need for any hardware, is software, specifically Photo Mechanic. Within the program there is an interface to Google maps. You can pin-point a location, obtain the lat/lon, and have that copied to the metadata of selected images. iPhoto also has this feature.
Jason, what I usually do is stick a small GPS unit in my pocket or pack and let it run while I'm out. The type does not matter as long as it will store a track in gpx format (I have an old Garmin vista hcx that usually gets appropriated for this task). Back at the computer there are many utilities (many free) for merging the coordinates and other info into the image exif. On a Mac GPSPhotoLinker works well but there are others. I think there is even a plugin for doing this task from within Lightroom.
