Default Just walking in the rain

The week I spent in the Mara (last week) was marred by rain most days so light was a missing factor from many of our sightings. On this afternoon we had a very heavy downpour but luckily found these two boys,

Just dashing out, but a warm welcome back Hilary, trust things were a bit more fruitful.

Talk later, drop me a PM, BTW did you manage to meet up with Ken W?

    Hilary,

There seems to be a very noticable colour cast on this, and it still has plenty of noise.

Sometimes the light is with you and sometimes it is not, this looks like the later.

I am not overly familiar with the 7D, have you bought Arties guide?

Hilary - welcome back. Looks like a nice sighting, two males with nice looking manes. I like how you got both in the frame. In a perfect setting I would have wanted to be a little more in front of the lions but understand the parameters of shooting in the bush. I agree with Ken that there's a lot of noise. I haven't tried to push the 7D that high with the ISO. Looking forward to seeing more from your trip.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Hi Hilary, so where was the second body & lens for a wider angle?

This is probably borderline in terms of space around the subject and yes, it would have been nice to have, as Rachel said, more space in front, but guess you were extremely excited at this particular moment in time. I do like the stance and the inclusion of the second brother, as it conveys what is happening, and both it seems are on a mission. The colour cast you can probably sort out, however the issues of, high ISO, weather conditions and time of day were not the best of buddies for you in achieving 'that shot', but it still has some nice qualities in it and hopefully there will be more, and better to come.

    Nice to have you back.

Steve, didn't meet up with Ken Dyball and don't know where the time went.

Kenya is in severe drought and I went in the dry season so you can imagine I was a bit frustrated by 7 nights in the Mara with thunderstorms every day. You want to see noise, my aardwolf at 6.20 am in the mist at 5000ISO has noise!!!

But, the bottom line is that I decided to take everything I could and adapt to the light and if I got noise, so be it. My first inclination was to process this as a b&w but was dissuaded by someone to leave it in colour. I'll go back to my original thoughts and see what I think.

As far as the 5dmk2 and the wider lens, I had only just put it down after shooting the lionesses as these boys were coming from quite a distance away. They walked a little faster than I anticipated. The 5d is very slow and way too slow for anything where the action may explode at any minute. So 4 lions heading off to hunt wasn't a scenario for that camera in my view.

Ken, I have Arties guide (2 of them for the 7D) and although incredibly good it doesn't actually tell the photographer how to improve the light. 3200 is a stretch but without the higher sensitivity the ss would have been too low to get any capture without movement.

But thanks for the comments anyway.

Rachel, I have some with more room in front but I don't like the walking pose as much. I'll look at them some more.

    Steve, I'll PM you.

Thanks Sid, I'm hoping so and have earmarked it for later attention. Still looking through what I have and cataloguing.

nice scene here Hilary...although as mentioned the conditions were against you.

I have had good results pushing the 7D to high ISO settings, even at ISO-6400, but then you need to ensure the histogram stays well to the RHS of the median. Using fill light from a spotlight or fill flash might help boost colour temperature and luminosity in these cases.

I like the rainy look and am looking forward to more sightings from your trip.

@ Ken D - would love to come visit some day - congrats on the move...

Ken, no I didn't get your text but lots of things go missing when it comes to phone calls getting routed back to Australia then into Kenya.

Congratulations on your posting to Olivers, one of the camps on my list for my Tanzanian visit. Hope you get time to take photos in amongst coping with all the tourists (some of whom will be a pain in the proverbial …).

    Morkel, great advice thanks.

    you're welcome Hilary

I did a little digging and found 2 posts I made with my 7D of a leopard, one @ ISO3200 in natural (albeit fading) light and on @ ISO6400 with spotlight.

Just to give you an idea of what I mean? Though I know in rainy weather there's hardly any light to go around and fill up the sensor :(

Love the position of the second lion, agree more room in front would be nice. Unfortunate with the lighting, but think with some color correction and noise reduction (both chromiance and luminance) you can get alot more from the image.

Thanks Morkel for the links. I remember those images. I feel a bit better about what I have and will work them a little harder for noise.

Thanks Todd for your comments. I'll post one I have with more space in front and see what everyone thinks, although I don't think the lion placement is as nice.
