    Default CS5 upgrade

I am currently running the full Windows version of CS2 and I'm considering upgrading to CS5. Even though I meet minimum specifications (Pentium 4 3Ghz (prescott), 3GB ram, ATI Radeon X1650 video), I'm concerned that CS5 might run slower than CS2 on my computer. Anyone running CS5 on a Pentium 4 machine with success?

Richard; what version of Windows? I run it on XP and 2GB ram (32 bit version) as well as 64bit on Win 7 with 6GB ram. The big difference is not only that performance is much faster with 64 bit, but with more ram you aren't limited by layers; with 2GB you can run out of memory pretty easily while adding them.
With such things as content-aware fills and a much better NR in ACR6, and other improvements, I would highly recommend upgrading to CS5.
    regards~Bill

    Hi Bill,

Sorry, WinXP Pro with all the latest updates. I actually have the ability to install 4gb of ram though on a 32 bit system I was only able to utilize a little over 3. Plus I had some stability issues with 4gb so I'm back to 3gb installed.

If CS5 will run with the same performance as CS2, I'll upgrade in a heartbeat. :) Amazon has the upgrade for $189 shipped. At the moment, running Fractalius is the only filter, function that slows the processing to a crawl.

Richard; I should have said XP pro with all the latest updates. I've read that installing more than 2GB RAM can cause performance issues in some 32bit systems, but perhaps this is not the case.
I can only compare with CS4, and not CS2, and I didn't see any performance decrease with 32bit WinXP pro and CS5. Fractalius will only run with 32bit, and it runs well as expected with the 32 bit version of CS5. Regards~Bill

    Richard,

I think it will work OK as your current machine has reasonable memory and 3 GHz. You can keep your old photoshop version running (at least with CS4 and previous versions you could).

I have CS5 in a package but haven't installed it yet. My core 2 duo system had 2 memory slots go bad on the mother board, so I had to drop to 2 GBytes a month ago. I simply reboot and only run photoshop when I need to do something big and it works fine. In photoshop, set the memory to be able to grab 80 to 90% of ram and you'll have fine performance I predict (default is 50%).

Also, typically Adobe allows upgrade from a couple of revisions back (need to check current policy), so if you do not upgrade to CS5, when CS6 comes out, you may need to pay full price.

Personally, I found a LOT of nice things in CS3 that made the upgrade very desirable for a photographer. CS4 was forced in my opinion because to get raw conversion on newer cameras, one needs the new version. But CS4 is a little better. CS5 I haven't seen something I need as a photographer, but I tend to use basic tools (e.g. curves, levels).

I have a new system (in parts) and as soon as I get the time I'll assemble my new i7 system with 6 GB ram to start to replace my aging windows system.

Richard; although I already mentioned content-aware fills, I might add that I think it is worth the price of admission to CS5!! It is extremely usefull, not only in adding canvas to an image, but much faster and often better that the clone-stamp tool. You might still need to use the clone-stamp tool for touch-ups, but it is a real time-saver. Google it, and you'll see what I mean. regards~Bill

Bill - thanks again for your help and input.

Roger - thanks for joining in and providing more info. I just placed the order and will receive the upgrade the first week of February. Looking forward to trying out the new features.

You can start using CS5 now without waiting. Go to Adobe and download the 30 day free trial. When you get your new copy as all you will have to do is enter the key number from it and you will be fully registered.

    Bill M.,

Thanks for the tip though I'll need to wait. We live in a remote area and the only somewhat reliable broadband service is Verizon's 3G using a wireless MIFI unit. It's certainly better than dial-up but we are limited to 5GB of bandwidth a month. I don't wish to waste it on a download of this size.

Just installed CS5 this afternoon. For anyone that might be interested, it does seem to run well on this aging Pentium 4 3Ghz, 3GB ram, WinXP Pro machine. Actually, it seems the same or just a bit faster than CS2.

    Default CS5 Upgrade

    Richard-

Just to save same anguish at install time, you might want to confirm that the upgrade offered on Amazon is useable to upgrade from CS2 (vs. CS3/CS4 only). I was lucky to be warned about this when I upgraded in Nov. Also be sure you understand what you're getting (CD vs. download; may not be an issue on Amazon).

    Bruce,

It was the DVD and it allowed an upgrade from CS2. The install worked flawlessly.
