    King Penguins, Falkland Islands

Partly cloudy with 40-50mph winds made for exciting conditions. Lying on my belly with camera in hand, often in the surf zone getting wet was well worth the effort. I covered the penguin group from all angles with lenses from 70-500mm. Blowing sand is what caused the soft contrast, etc to the bottom of the image. Sand was everywhere, and I think I am making a pearl at this very moment-LOL This was my 5th visit to the islands and I am already looking forward to returning to this magical place in early 2012.

Great mood in this image. The wind blown sand really adds drama, and contrasts nicely with the darkening sky. Great composition overall.

    Chas:

I like the feel here, the two outlying birds walking in to join the group, turbulent clouds, sandstorm effect.

I might be tempted to further darken and increase the contrast in the clouds to give them a more menacing feel

    Cheers

    Randy

Chas, incredible! I love the feel and look of this image. The blowing sand gives it a somewhat surreal feel. Personally, I wouldn't change anything.

Chas, I love the look to this one and can only hope to get a chance someday to capture my own. I love the way the group looks. The blowing sand makes this one special to me.

Everything came together beautifully here: group, sky, blowing sand, incoming waves... I think you already created a pearl with this image

Captivating photo I wish was posted larger to appreciate it even more.

I love the rough surf and water color. Cant tell from the web image but is the white foam left side lacking detail ?

Do you recall the focal length ?

    Mike,

Taken at 70mm. Yes, it is surf and trust me there are no blown highlights ;-)

    Best,

    Chas

An amazing image that feels almost like a painting, thanks to the mood created by the sand below and the menacing sky above.

    Great capture!

The sand adds a wonderful surreal look. And the clouds and image design are killer.

Everything about this image puts it in the realms of perfect.

I have always wanted to go to the Falklands but have not as yet been able to get there.
