    Here's the female of the species, prying open a cone with her offset mandibles, with tongue ready to lift out the seed. Lying on my belly in a snowbank. This lass, and several others, kept drifting closer to me so I kept having to scoot backwards to keep them beyond the minimum focusing distance.

    D90 | 500f4 + 1.4X | ISO 640 | 1/1600s @ f/9 | -0.3 EV | braced on elbows.

    Great sharpness and colors on ths Bill. Well exposed and I like the bg. Well done.

    Very nice.
    I prefer bird photos with a bit of a setting and environment.
    (Probably in the minority here with all the sharp photos against a blank colored bg.)
    I really like the first one and this one is better.
    Great shot.

    Count me as another who appreciates seeing context.

    I also appreciate hearing the woes of shooting with a big beautiful extended 500.
