Birders and photographers have been flocking to the Jersey shore to see a group of White-winged Crossbills, and a pair of Red Crossbills, that have been visiting some Japanese Black Pines for the past few weeks. I finally got my chance on Thursday to see these rare visitors from the north. Amazing to watch these little birds pry open the cones with their offset mandibles, and then lift out the seeds with their tongues. Also interesting how well their color matches their chosen meal.
